With Hurricane Irene headed on a destructive path towards our area, members prepared for the worse. Members topped off apparatus with fuel and checked all the saws to ensure we were ready to handle whatever Irene had in store for us. Some members prepared to spend the weekend staffing both the engine and ambulance at the station. On Saturday morning, the effects of Irene began with rain starting about 9 AM. On Saturday evening, units ran three calls for wires down and one call to assist a family with an evacuation of their residence as a result of flooding. On Sunday morning, passing members took a ride around town to see what damage had been done and to check for road closures. Members observed flooding due to the large amount of rain, especially on the east side of town where the river was rapidly rising. With the east side of town being cut off from the station, the decision was made to have Engine 604 moved to a location on Greensboro Road to enable quicker response times in emergency situations. On Sunday, units ran two calls for wires down and one call to assist an elderly lady from her flooded residence. As residents began to clean up from Irene on Monday, we ran three service calls.
